About

Writing Passions: It is just so fun to write (and read) picture books that catapult, captivate or charm you into thinking big thoughts. I thrive on mixing quirky, high-interest content that lets learners criss-cross the curriculum with humor, high-level thinking, & hands-on learning. I balance my writing life with running, ice cream & all-things-beach.

Education: I started at Bucknell University aiming to be the next Jane Goodall...but with elephants. Yet I could not forego my life-long desire to teach students with special needs, a major BU did not offer. The University of Virginia invited me to finish my B.S. in Special Education and stay for my M.Ed. in the Educateur Program. I learned on many levels through varied teaching internships, riding horses, finishing a few triathlons, working in hippotherapy (PT with horses), and then working in my own classroom. While teaching in Los Angeles I completed my Professional Clear Certificate (K-12) at Loyola University.

Professional Development: Every day of writing is a labor of love and learning. I started by re-discovering the world through the eyes of our children. The special needs of my private tutoring clients opened new perspectives, too. I've enhanced freelancing for K-12 publishers & trade magazines with substitute teaching, literacy tutoring, blogging, and serving as a public library board member. My work with plant biologists exposes me to fun new ways of sharing evidence-based ideas. Reviewing books for Children's Literature and NSTA keeps sharp my focus on critical elements of literature and nonfiction writing.

Like a clever octopus, an engaged student will embrace many things to observe, adapt and thrive.

And just as a multi-faceted heart comes from just 2 circles & 1 square, so too does cross-curricular integration create a vibrant love of learning.
